Tokenization allows customers to save their card details for faster checkout on future purchases. Card data is securely stored by PowerTranz – sensitive information never touches your server.
How Tokenization Works
When a customer saves their card:
- Card details are sent securely to PowerTranz
- PowerTranz stores the card and returns a token (a unique identifier)
- The token is saved in WooCommerce, linked to the customer’s account
- For future purchases, only the token is used – no card details are transmitted
Enabling Tokenization
To enable saved cards:
- Go to WooCommerce → Settings → Payments → PowerTranz
- Check the Enable Tokenization option (“Payment Settings” Tab)
- Save changes
Tokenization is enabled by default.
Customer Experience
Saving a Card
During checkout, logged-in customers will see a checkbox option to save their card for future purchases. Guest customers cannot save cards.
Using a Saved Card
On future checkouts, customers can select from their saved cards instead of entering card details again.
Managing Saved Cards
Customers can manage their saved cards from their account:
- Go to My Account → Payment Methods
- View all saved cards
- Delete cards they no longer want saved
- Set a default payment method
Subscriptions & Saved Cards
Tokenization is required for WooCommerce Subscriptions. When a customer purchases a subscription, their card is automatically saved to enable automatic renewal payments.
Customers can update the card used for their subscription from:
- My Account → Subscriptions – Change payment method for a specific subscription
- My Account → Payment Methods – Manage all saved cards
Security
- Full card numbers are never stored on your server
- Only the last 4 digits and card type are saved for display purposes
- Tokens are unique to your merchant account and cannot be used elsewhere
- 3D Secure can still be applied to saved card transactions for additional security
